Rakeback Saves the Day

I didn’t used to be able to make much money playing poker. Don’t get me wrong, I made some money playing poker just not as much as now. I used to have to pay for food at the casino, do the valet, tip the dealer, wait for a table, buy a drink, blah blah blah. Now streamlined and online, I not only don’t pay for anything, I can play in as many tables at once as I can keep up with and on top of all of that, I get some of my rake back. I make money even when I’m losing!

A lot of the world is rife with rakeback opportunities, really. Take taxes for one: play the game right and keep track of everything and you can get an income tax return. Similar idea, maybe not as fun as playing poker, paying taxes, but the rakeback principle applies.

Frequent Flier miles are rakebackish, buy one get one free coupons are sort of like rakeback.

A lot of the world is rife with rakeback opportunities.

But imagine if it all was as easy as a rakeback program! Imagine if instead of braising your brain in the absurdities of intricate tax code crap for days, the government showed up at your door, made sure your kids were real and everything was on the up and up, then just gave you the cash. That’s it, check if everything is cool, give out the money then off to the next thing.

Ha!

Maybe the whole kharma/dharma thing is like rakeback, a “what you sow so shall you reap” type of idea. Maybe, the unstoppable force of evolution is pushing us inextricably in the direction of this rakeback. Maybe it is just a matter of time before IRS agents are helpful multi-lingual customer service driven employees who let reality speak for itself without paperwork.

Or maybe it’s just a nice way to up EV playing poker. Either way, I’m a fan.

The Mathematics of Poker

You may have heard some people talk about poker players with respect to their mathematical skills. “He’s a math player,” some might say, or “I’m not a math player, I play by instinct.” To be a good poker player, especially at a game like no-limit Texas hold’em, you need to be both. You need to understand the basic mathematics poker skills, things like pot odds and outs. You also need to understand the psychology of the game. You need to be able to read players and understand a player’s thought process. Either one without the other will leave you an incomplete player. Continue Reading »

This Game of Ours, Chapter Three

For the second time in my life, my father decided the family had to move. And for the second time the upheaval was very sudden. He had finally tired of spending months on end at sea and took a job as a Vice President with a large shipping company.

His salary was good, so he wanted to move us all out to the suburbs, upgrading from a Queens apartment to a Long Island house. As ever, the decision was quickly backed up with action and the moving trucks were rolling down the road within days. Continue Reading »
