Pretty exciting draft this year.
IBGPN: Who will have the better immediate impact, McFadden on the Raiders or Jones on the ‘Boys? My money is on Jones behind that line, but McFadden should continue to punish defenders in this league.

I kinda agree with ya, Freq. How does Russell do in Oakland to allow McFadden run…big question mark.

What do people think of Matt Ryan, I still think the jury is still out on him. I like this Flacco kid though, I think he will be good, like a Roethlisberger.

Baltimore made a play for the #2 pick for Ryan, but didn’t offer up enough (even though it was a fairly large offering to begin with), so I really like how they traded down then back up again to pick up Flacco. He has a cannon of an arm, but there is a big difference between 1AA and the NFL. Either way, a better solution than either Boller or Smith.
Ryan’s biggest difficulty will be stepping into the mess that is the Falcons right now. I don’t think anyone would volunteer for that, but hopefully by drafting a QB first pick it sends a message to everyone in the Atlanta area, and the NFL, that it is time to move on.

Atlanta should have taken Glenn Dorsey at 3 and the Flacco at 21. Matt Ryan is not a number 3 player. Jones will make a much bigger impact first couple of years because Oakland line sucks, period. Hopefully McFadden will be smart and sign no more than 3 years and be a free agent sooner than later.

Where would you like to see McFadden at, Ingy?
I think you are right, Felix will be a great compliment to Barber and help the ‘Boys out immediately.

If the Falcons wanted to take the best player they would have taken Dorsey but taking Ryan was as much a political stunt as anything designed to improved their football team.
There were far bigger fish to fry in Atlanta than draft picks and their relative merit. Atlanta made an extremely shrewd move for their immediate future and for that of the fans that were only compelled to pay money at the turnstiles to see Vick play. This selection will finally put the MV saga to rest and allow the genuine fans to come to see some new bloods strut their stuff.
Well done, Falcons! Good to see someone in the front office understands that football in the modern era isn’t just about winning football games. Who knew!

CS, are you serious? Do you really believe for a moment that Ryan can replace Vick? He is Matt Ryan, not Peyton Manning. He fixes not a single problem there. I understand your point but he is not a big enough name to carry that team.

I don’t think Ryan will carry that team either. I think he is a serviceable QB, a good backup, but I have my doubts he will be a good starter.

Well, Ingy, my boy. Once again you missed the forest for the trees. Where in my post did I say Matt Ryan could carry the team?
The major point is this. Matt Ryan is a symbol of a regime trying to put a public relations disaster behind them. It was necessary for them to take him in the top 10 to signal a clear intent to the supporter base that Vick was gone forever and that they were intent upon rebuilding with some exciting young (and presumably) arrest-free talent.
From what I can ascertain having watched Matt Ryan, he is a stand up young guy and a genuine ambassador for that organisation. He is articulate and well-spoken and has a terrific sense of humour.
You see a young guy trying to fill the shoes of a superstar…I see a young man being groomed as the public face of an organisation with one sole purpose in mind. To represent the Atlanta Falcons in the best way possible from a socialistic perspective, aside from just football talent.

CS Flacco could be that same face of the team, no? I know what your saying putting Vick behind them etc., etc., etc, but there was not a sick ass QB this year to do that with. You buying a Matt Ryan jersey just to have one? No way!!

I see both points.
1) You want to move past the Vick fiasco and get yourself a new face at QB, who is an all-around good guy.
2) But do you blow a high draft pick for a player like that?
Wow, tough call, both are right (or wrong).

I don’t see it as right and wrong. You have several key objectives for your organisation going foward and you have a chance to achieve one of them early on day 1 of the national draft and you take it. You can’t be wrong. It’s just a matter of priorities. All decisions are right, it is just what you want more.
Atlanta told the wider community what they valued most and nobody in Atlanta should be second guessing that decision. It came at a price but it had significant upside too. The upside has the potential to reshape the organisation and take it forward in a way that will set the tone for the future. That can never be underestimated.
I like Ryan. I think he is a good kid. He doesn’t appear to have the skills but you never know. He could be better than we all think. If he had franchise QB capabilities that would be a bonus. It isn’t why they hired him.

Speaking of QBs, what do people think of Brohm or Booty?
|
|
|

I like Brohm. He should provide adequate pressure for Rogers. Booty seemed a bit static to me from the tape I saw but I would stand corrected. I understand he has a strong arm so that is a plus.
