I just love the title. Doesn’t everyone say “No to Tassie.” I want a t-shirt or bumper sticker with that saying.

“Many Tasmanians feel we’ve been taken for granted.”

No, they just don’t care.

The afl should give tassie a team. They get 15,000 bodies at the game but when they do a head count for the attendance they can put down 30,000 on the stats.

They should have a team. They have provided many great stars to the AFL/VFL and haven’t been rewarded with anything. They have a population that can sustain one team quite easily. AFL just wants money and they will get that from the high growth areas unfortunately.

Can Sydney support another team? They have 1 now, but I thought it was rugby league territory?

They have the population but their favourite two sports are Rugby League and Rugby Union.. the Swans only got a heap of supporter/members after they won the Grand Final and many have disappeared already.

So why do they think another team can exist financially? Go to an area where a team will make it!

Because the areas of Gold Coast and West Sydney can have large business’ behind them and lots of sponsorship. They don’t care whether the team gets 10k fans or 80k fans to a game, they just want to reap the benefits of having AFL promoted more in these areas. The new club pays the AFL money for entrance into the league each year and the AFL gets a % of profits from gate takings and other things like that… so if they can put it into a “growth” area that might end up having a large crowd to a game.. they’ll take it rather than Tasmania that has a spread out population (mind you the most it takes to go from one end to the other is 2 hours, I’d do that to watch a footy game) and the fact that the population is never going to grow much.

it’s all $$$. Anyone can see why the gold coast/sydney is more attractive that Tasmania in financial terms.

Besides that, I don’t think Tassie can actually support a team based on it’s population. They don’t have the population, and the only reason they fill 20,000 seat per game is because they only get 4 games (or something) a year. How do I know this? I’m from Tasmania, and the once something becomes too regular they’ll get bored and the numbers will drop. They lost the V8 super cars a few years back because of poor attendance, and that was once a year.

They only fill it because Tassie is so split in terms of who they support. Plus, it only fits that many people in the first place. They have 500k people, surely 30-40k can turn out and that is better than what will turn up to a game in West Sydney.

Well, its an interesting topic, I must say. I think this same discussion was brought up when I first joined there, like 4 years ago.
