Pay careful attention to the cards that have been folded. If you have three clubs on your first four cards but there have been four clubs in the hands of your opponents, drawing to a flush is not going to be a profitable play. If you are going for a straight, make sure that there are plenty of cards that can make your straight that are still available. Nothing is more disastrous than putting in money to catch a card when all of the cards of that rank are out and you are drawing dead.
By the same token, try to be aware of how live your opponents are drawing. Even if an opponent is showing three cards to a flush, it is just as unlikely that he has it or will make it if most of the clubs are dead as it would be if you were trying to make it.
Seven card stud is a complex game, with many pieces of poker strategy to know and traps to dodge. Use the above ideas to help you stay out of the most basic traps, and then try to discover some more on your own to really get a handle on your seven card stud games.

The Basics of Deuce to Seven Triple Draw Triple draw belongs to the family of lowball poker games, that features four betting rounds and three drawing opportunities. Similar to five-card draw, every player is dealt five cards facedown. During each drawing round, each player will have the chance to make a bet.
Like many poker variations, there are mandatory bets made by the small and big blind. During the first two betting rounds, the minimum bet must be equal to the amount of the big blind. During the final two betting rounds, the minimum bet must be at least double the amount of the big blind. The first betting round takes place after the initial deal. The other three betting rounds correspond to the three different drawing rounds.
Players can draw as many cards as they want during each round. After the final round of betting takes place, each player shows his hand. The lowest hand wins. Get used to thinking low. The nut-low in deuce to seven triple draw is 2-3-4-5-7. If you have the lowest possible straight (2-3-4-5-6) you will have a high-value hand. This straight isn’t viewed as a 6-low hand. Straights and flushes will hurt your ability to form the lowest possible hand. A straight is worse than two pair or trips, so it’s important that you suspend any urge to chase after straight-draws. Just think of traditional Texas Holdem hand rankings, and value these hands in reverse order.

As in any poker games, playing too many hands is the number one way seven card stud players get themselves into trouble. In seven card stud, the danger can be even greater, especially for players switching over from hold’em, since having only two cards that look good in seven card stud is usually not enough. If you start with the best hand in seven card stud, you’ll usually end up with the best hand, so you can give yourself the biggest advantage by only playing when all three of your cards are working.
Two cards to a straight or flush with an unconnected card is not a good hand in seven card stud. Even a pair with a weak kicker is not a great hand. If you have 9c 9s 7d, a player with an ace showing bets, and a player with a king showing raises, you should probably just throw your hand away. The worst thing that can happen is for an 8 or a 6 to come, enticing you to draw at a straight and put even more money in the pot when you are in all likelihood way behind.

Because of the above, many tactics that are crucial to no-limit Texas holdem success are almost entirely useless in Omaha. Bluffing is possible in pot limit Omaha, but it is extremely dangerous, much more dangerous than in holdem, because it is so likely that one of your opponents holds the nut hand and cannot be bluffed. Generally you should only attempt a bluff if you are in late position, few people remain in the pot, and they have shown great weakness.
A poker strategy tactic like slow playing also should be used very infrequently. Even if you flop the nuts, there are a horde of turn cards that will give the nuts to someone else. For example, you hold Ah Kh 8s 8c and the flop comes 8d 7s 3s. You hold the best hand. However, any spade that does not pair the board will give an opponent a winning flush. Any 4, 5, 6, 9, T or J may give an opponent a straight that beats you, and any over card could give an opponent a higher set. You must make opponents pay to draw out on you. Winning the pot uncontested in this situation is a fine result in pot limit Omaha.

In Texas holdem, the value of your hand is very straightforward. Two aces are two aces, no matter what color they are. In Omaha, a hand like As Ac 3d 6h should probably be thrown away, and you would certainly not raise with such a hand in a full pot limit Omaha poker game. A hanger is a card that does not fit into your hand, and they are deadly in Omaha. You should be looking to play hands where all your cards are active, such as double suited hands (hands where you can make flushes in two different suits) wraparound straight draws (for example 9 T J Q) or some combination of pairs and draws (for example Ks Kc Qs Jh). Remember that in all forms of Omaha, hand selection is key, even more so than in Texas holdem.
