Poker is a game of skill with an element of luck. There are several deciding factors in poker on what makes a winning hand. A lot can be learned by playing on free poker sites to get adjusted to this game without spending anything. Let’s explore some of these factors and the effects they have on you as you learn poker.

We will start with one of the most aggravating things that can happen to you when you play poker. I am talking about those bad beats. Everyone has a bad beat story, and if you play poker for very long, you will have one too. It seems like the guy at the end of the table, just keeps busting you up all night long. He is playing hands you have been folding all night long, in an effort to play tight and not waste your chip stack. It seems like he just keeps on getting lucky, on the river of course. This can be one of the most irritating scenarios for a poker player. Whether you are playing in an online tournament, or in live casino play this is a common problem for many players. Bad beats are common inpoker, and you might as well learn early on how to best deal with them. Some people get so annoyed, that it affects their play for the rest of the night. This is called being on tilt, or steaming and it is never a good situation for a poker player. The best advice I have on this subject, is a friend once told me, “Don’t let it be about your ego.” By this he meant that because I hated to lose any pot, I was taking it personally when those bad beats happened. When you take a bad beat, and someone pulls a big pot against you or knocks you out of a poker tournament with pure luck, the only thing you can do is smile and play on. It is not easy to do, but what is the point of wasting the rest of your chip stack just because you are mad?

Every once in a while, it will swing your way and you too will get lucky and win a pot you weren’t favored to win. When that happens, smile and drag your chips. You now have a brag story to tell. The truth about online poker is that there is variance that will help determine if you win or lose. There are no absolutes in poker, and sometimes you can win or lose against the odds. It is important to remember that the good, solid poker players will, over time, make more money in the end than loose, aggressive players that play every pot with wild abandon.
