California Lowball (Ace to Five)

published on 02/12/08 at 12:31 pm

PokerPlasm.comIn California lowball, the objective is to make the worst possible five card hand. This means you want an unpaired hand with the lowest high card possible. In California lowball aces are low and straights and flushes do not count against you so the best possible low is A 2 3 4 5, called a “wheel.” California lowball is played as draw poker.

There is a small and big blind as in Texas holdem and players may bet or raise, then replace cards from their hand, then bet or raise once more before the showdown.

Your low is governed by the highest card in your hand, so 9 8 7 6 4 would beat J 5 3 2 A even though most of the cards in the jack high hand are lower. California lowball is also played with a joker, which is wild.
